A Certified Life Care Planner for 18 years, Dr. MacKenzie’s approach to life care planning is rooted in her passion for cultivating quality of life for those affected by traumatic injuries. As she expressed, “When it comes to preparing a life care plan for someone, you’re basically looking at how to take them where they are with their injury and promote the best outcomes for them.”
It was during her career as a critical care nurse that Dr. MacKenzie gained profound insights into the isolation experienced by individuals suffering from catastrophic injuries, specifically those affected by traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Her dedication to supporting brain injury survivors led her to co-found the East Texas Brain Injury Support Group, creating a community for survivors and their families to connect and share their experiences.
From a young age, Dr. MacKenzie's path was shaped by pivotal moments and influential figures that inspired her to help others. At a young age, she read a book about doctors and nurses aiding a patient with heart disease that sparked her initial interest in healthcare and helping those suffering from injury and illness. This interest was nurtured by her mother who raised her family with the core values of hard work, dedication, and compassion, and emphasized the importance of education. The experience of being a mother further enriched Dr. MacKenzie's appreciation for the significance of quality of life, reinforcing her commitment to positively impacting the lives of those grappling with health challenges.
