The Nurse's Role in Life Care Planning
With nearly 4.2 million registered nurses (RNs) in the United States, it is the nation’s largest healthcare profession. With National Nurses Week from May 6th through 12th, there is no better time than the present to recognize the hard working nurses that are valuable members of the Mackenzie Life Care Planners team. Our nurses are vital to the process of performing vocational assessments and creating life care plans for our clients.
Assessors and Evaluators
Nurses working in a life care planner role have the task of evaluating patients and their diagnoses. They research and investigate possible long term care solutions. The goal is to identify the best possible care solution. It takes a special kind of nurse to be successful in this role. They need to be research and detail oriented. They need to analyze the data in order to find the best possible options for a viable life care plan. This requires discipline and structure to ensure that each patient’s condition is viewed from various perspectives to ensure all care needs are addressed.
The nurses at MLCP review and analyze all of the medical records received and formulate a medical summary. This summary outlines all that the client received relevant to their injuries. Once a summary is created, the nurse consults with one of our experts to commence work on writing the report.
During this research, assessment, and report formulation process, our nurse may need to review new incoming medical records. This often happens when the individual has additional and more recent medical office visits, procedures, or treatments. These additional medical records are added to our client’s medical summary. This ensures that the medical report is complete and up to date.
Creating a comprehensive life care plan is about more than data and reports. Our nurses and experts recognize that there is an individual behind those medical reports. Therefore, during a plaintiff case, one of our nurses and experts meets with the client. During this meeting, they evaluate the current status and needs of the client.
In addition to the life care plan, our experts assess the client’s injuries and ability to work. A vocational assessment is important in determining the client’s ability to earn money. This is important for ensuring the treatment plan addresses client needs that can facilitate a return to partial or full functionality. This aids in the client returning to work in some capacity.
Advocate and Implementation
A nurse follows a case from intake until settlement. A nurse’s role in life planning requires them to be excellent communicators and educators. We are grateful for our nurses, as they work in tandem with our experts as a cohesive team. They are also able to communicate with a wide range of people, from medical professionals and lawyers to injured clients and their families. Strong communicators to do more than just speak, though. Our nurses also take the time to listen. This critical component ensures that they understand the client’s needs and concerns. They can then answer questions and educate the client and their family. It is the life care planning nurse that aids in educating about the injured person’s medical condition and the required treatment for it. This means interpreting medical documentation and records into easily understandable and relatable terms. As a result, clients and their families can feel more at ease, knowing they have someone who is experienced in creating a detailed life care plan.
